About Proverbs
Proverbs is a book of short, sharp sayings that teach practical wisdom — about words, money, work, friendship, anger, and family. It insists that all true wisdom begins in one place: the fear of the LORD. In the Bible's big story, it paints what everyday faithfulness looks like, and the New Testament goes on to present Christ as wisdom in person.
- Written by
- Most of the sayings are linked to Solomon, with sections credited to 'the wise,' Agur, and King Lemuel, and part of the collection was compiled later by King Hezekiah's men.
- When
- The core sayings come from Solomon's era around 950 BC, and the collection reached its finished form by Hezekiah's day, about 700 BC, or somewhat later.
